Installing the mechanical systems of “America’s largest floating
casino” was no easy task. Not only did the owner need to be
satisfied, but the job had to be U.S. Coast Guard approved, as
well.
Boyd Gaming of Las Vegas wanted to build the country’s largest
casino boat operating on inland waters. When estimators
actually put their calculators to work on the original plan,
results were nearly two times higher than the budget would
allow. To get back on track, it was decided that one of the
decks had to go. Greg Maus, vice president of sales for
International Piping Systems (IPS) the mechanical contractor on
the project, worked with a marine architect and the shipbuilder
to downsize the mechanical systems for the smaller boat.
Everything related to HVAC had to be fine tuned.
Through the expert skills of the contractor and the Pipe fitters
of Local 597, the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, Indiana was
completed, approved and kept within its original budget. The
quality of the labor – including the installation of normal
marine systems found aboard ships - makes it 100% seaworthy, as
well. And, the heavy-duty, state-of-the-art HVAC system is on
par with a hospital operating room for air quality.
Visitors appreciate the spacious, breathable environment aboard
the Blue Chip Casino, even though they don’t see the super sized
HVAC system that makes it possible
